چکیده

The aims of this study are twofold. We first seek to validate a previous study conducted on one speaker. It identified lower face visible articulatory correlates of contrastive focus in French for real (nonreiterant) speech. We thus conducted the same study for another speaker. Our second goal was to enlarge the set of cues measured to other facial movements. To do so we used a complementary measurement technique (Optotrak) on the same corpus. The articulatory measurements showed that there was a set of consistent visible articulatory correlates of contrastive focus in French across speakers: a) an increase in lip area and jaw opening on the focused item b) a lengthening of the focal syllables c) a postfocal hypo-articulation. However, there are also some speaker specific strategies. The first speaker showed an anticipation strategy but the second speaker did not. The Optotrak measurements confirmed that: a) focus corresponded to an increase in lip height and/or in lip width b) the post-focal sequence was hypo-articulated. We also found that: a) the focused item was often correlated with a slight head movement (nod) b) facial movements such as cheek movements were amplified when there was focus and c) eyebrow movements were not correlated with focus.

Audiovisual production and perception of contrastive focus in French: a multispeaker study

This study examines the visual cues to prosodic contrastive focus in Hexagonal French and their role in visual speech perception. Two audiovisual corpora were recorded (from two male native speakers of French) consisting of sentences with a subject-verb-object (SVO) syntactic structure. Four conditions were studied: focus on each phrase (S,V,O) and broad focus. The corpora were first acoustical...

Identification of the Possible Visible Correlates of Contrastive Focus in French

This study aims at determining whether there are visual cues to contrastive focus in French. An audiovisual corpus was recorded from a male native speaker of French consisting of sentences with a subject-verb-object (SVO) syntactic structure. Four conditions were studied: focus on each phrase (S,V,O) and broad focus. The corpus was first acoustically validated: the pitch maximum over the uttera...

Visual Correlates of Prosodic Contrastive Focus in French: Description and Inter-Speaker Variability

This study is a follow-up of previous studies we conducted on the visible articulatory correlates of French prosodic contrastive focus. A two speaker analysis using an automatic lip-tracking device had shown that these correlates existed and were used in visual perception. However the articulatory strategies depended on the speaker. The purpose of this study was thus to extend the analysis to o...

Can we see Focus

The purpose of this study was to determine whether the visual modality is useful for the perception of prosody. An audiovisual corpus consisting of four focus conditions (subject, verb, object focus and broad focus) was recorded from a male native speaker of French. A preliminary production study showed that there are visible correlates of contrastive focus in French a) increase in lip area and...

Intelligent identification of vehicle’s dynamics based on local model network

This paper proposes an intelligent approach for dynamic identification of the vehicles. The proposed approach is based on the data-driven identification and uses a high-performance local model network (LMN) for estimation of the vehicle’s longitudinal velocity, lateral acceleration and yaw rate. The proposed LMN requires no pre-defined standard vehicle model and uses measurement data to identif...
